Premier Announces Rm 160,000 Grant To Kuching High School At Teochew Anniversary Celebration

Kuching, June 16 – Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, announced a grant of RM 160,000 to Kuching High School. This announcement was made during the 160th Anniversary Celebration of the Kuching Teochew Association, held at the Imperial Hotel.

Abang Johari highlighted the longstanding contributions of the Teochew community to the region, particularly through education.

"The Kuching High School has produced a lot of talent. As we celebrate this milestone, it’s important to acknowledge the impact of education on our society. The narrative of the high school students serves as a reminder to the younger generation of Teochew that we are fortunate to live in a peaceful country, one that integrates various civilizations and focuses on uplifting our lives," he remarked.

Emphasizing the pivotal role of education in societal progress, Abang Johari noted, "You need knowledge to succeed, and to acquire knowledge, you need to go to school. The Teochew community understood this well. While they excelled in commerce, they never overlooked the importance of education. The establishment of Kuching High School by past Teochew generations is a testament to this commitment, and it is a key factor in our progress."

Drawing from this model, the Premier outlined his vision for Sarawak's educational future. "If Sarawak wants to advance and be competitive, we must have Sarawakians who are disciplined and well-educated. By 2026, our goal is to provide free education to all Sarawakians, regardless of their background. Whether you are Chinese, Malay, Dayak, Iban, or Orang Ulu, as long as you are Sarawakian, you will have the opportunity for free tertiary education in Sarawak-owned universities."

Abang Johari underscoring the broader implications of this initiative. "This educational background will drive our economic development, harnessing the talent of Sarawakians. Education is the foundation of our growth, and with this grant, we are investing in our future."
